Stone Oak was built for iron. The hill country limestone, the stucco and clay tile, the tall two-story entries along 281 — these are houses drawn around a front door with real weight to it. A builder-grade door reads as a placeholder the moment you pull into the driveway.
Colonial Iron Doors has been hand forging entry doors, windows and gates for Texas homes for over 30 years. Our San Antonio showroom is on Colwick Street, a short drive down 281 from Stone Oak, and that is where these projects start: someone measures at your house, a design gets drawn for your actual opening, and the door is forged to it.
Built for the way Stone Oak homes are drawn
Most entries up here fall into one of three shapes, and each one asks something different of a door:
- Arched Mediterranean and Tuscan openings. The most common shape in Stone Oak, and the one where stock doors fail hardest — a rectangular door in an arched opening never stops looking wrong. Ours are built to the arch.
- Transitional square-top entries with sidelights. Usually eight to ten feet, often with a transom above. This is where hand-forged scrollwork earns its keep, because there is enough glass to see it against.
- Modern flat-top steel and glass. Newer builds off Bulverde and in Cibolo Canyons lean this way — minimal frames, big light, no ornament. That is a steel door rather than a wrought iron one, and we build both.
Because every door is made to order, none of this requires a compromise. If the opening is 46 inches wide and arched at 96, that is what gets built. Show us a photo of something you saw and we will forge it, whether or not it appears in our catalog.
The west-facing entry problem
A lot of Stone Oak front doors face west, which means afternoon sun hits them directly for hours in July and August. That is what destroys a wood door — it dries, cups and separates at the joints, and no amount of refinishing keeps up.
Iron does not move like that. Ours are finished with a baked powder coat rather than a brushed-on paint, and the finish is covered by warranty for five years alongside the door itself. Every door also comes with operable glass as standard, so the panels open for cleaning and for cross ventilation on the evenings when San Antonio finally cools off.
What every Colonial door includes
- 14-gauge frames. Not 16, not 18. The frame is the first thing that gives on a cheap door.
- Scrollwork hand forged from solid 5/8" bar. Solid stock worked hot by a blacksmith, not hollow tube bent cold.
- Operable glass, standard. Not an upgrade, not an option. On every door we build.
- Five-year warranty on the door’s function and on the finish, plus one year on the glass from the manufacturer.

More than the front door
Stone Oak houses tend to open to the back, and that is where the rest of the work usually goes:
- Steel patio and bi-fold doors for the long glass walls onto a hill country view, where a slim steel frame gives you far more glass than a wood or vinyl system.
- Wrought iron sliding doors for interiors that need to divide without closing off.
- Wine cellar doors — a glass-and-iron cellar door is the single most photographed thing in most of these houses.
- Steel windows to match the entry, so the front of the house reads as one design instead of two.
- Gates and railings for driveways, courtyards and stair runs.

Photographs flatten iron. A 5/8" scroll looks like a line on a screen and like a forged bar in your hand, and the difference between our finishes is nearly impossible to judge from a website. Frequently asked questions
Can you build to an opening that already exists?
Yes, and it is most of what we do. Someone comes to the house, measures the opening as built, and the door is forged to those numbers. Stone Oak has a lot of non-standard arches and oversized entries, and none of that is a problem.
Will an iron door hold up to San Antonio heat?
Better than wood, by a wide margin. Iron does not cup, warp or separate at the joints with heat cycling, and the powder-coat finish is baked rather than brushed. The finish carries a five-year warranty.
Can I get something that is not in the catalog?
Yes. We specialize in custom work — show us a picture of a door you like and we will manufacture it for you. The catalog is a starting point, not a menu.
Do you build the doors yourselves?
Yes. Everything is produced in our own facility about 150 miles south of San Antonio, hand forged by our blacksmiths and inspected piece by piece before it ships. More about how we work.
