West Texas, city by city
West Texas is not one market. A new build off the loop in Lubbock, an oil-money custom home in Midland and a ranch entrance outside San Angelo each ask for something different. Here is where we work and what the projects usually look like.
Lubbock
Our largest volume in the region. New construction in Vintage Township and out toward Lakeridge and Kings Gate, plus replacements on the older brick homes around Tech Terrace where the entry has to match a facade built decades before it.
Midland and Odessa
Permian Basin custom builds, usually larger entries with double doors at 74″ × 97″ or pivots, and a lot of matching window and patio packages on the same house.
Amarillo and the Panhandle
Wind is the design constraint here more than anywhere else in Texas. Frames, hardware and weather sealing get specified accordingly.
Abilene and San Angelo
Ranch and acreage properties, where the work is often an entry door plus driveway gates that have to read as one design.
Built for West Texas sun, wind and dust
West Texas is brutal on an exterior door in a way the rest of the state is not. Close to 270 days of sun a year, UV that fades a finish faster than anywhere else we work, wind that runs for days at a stretch, and dust storms that push grit into every gap a door has.
Every door we make is formed in our own shop from 11-gauge steel — no filler, no hollow tube stock. That matters more out here, because a lightweight door in a 40-mile-an-hour wind is a door that racks, rattles and eventually stops sealing. Jamb and slab are both filled with closed-cell polyurethane foam, and the glass is double tempered and insulated.
The sealing package is the part that earns its keep in the Panhandle: full perimeter weather stripping on the door and on the glass frame, plus a sweep at the threshold. That is what keeps the dust on the porch instead of on your floor after a storm.
The finish is a polyurethane paint selected for resistance to UV, corrosion and humidity, in Dark Copper, Copper, Pewter, Dark Bronze, Bronze and Black. Five years of warranty on the finish, lifetime structural warranty on what sits behind it. In this sun, that finish warranty is not a formality.
What we build for West Texas homes
Every one of these is made to order in our own shop, and we handle the installation:
- Wrought iron entry doors in single, double and pivot configurations
- Steel entry doors with modern profiles and minimal sightlines
- Steel windows and wrought iron windows to match the entry
- Steel patio doors and sliding doors for indoor-outdoor living
- Wrought iron gates for driveways, ranch entrances and courtyards
- Steel wine cellar and wine room doors
Glass options include clear, Aquatex, Rain, Flemish, Satin and Low E. See finished installations in our project gallery.
Working with West Texas builders
Nearly all of our West Texas volume comes through builders rather than direct to the homeowner, and almost all of it is new construction. Send the elevation and the door and window schedule and we return a written estimate with piece counts, finishes and lead time, ready to price into a bid. Because everything is fabricated to the plan instead of pulled from a catalog, we can take the whole house on one schedule with one finish across the entry, the windows, the patio doors and the gates. More on how we work with builders.
Lubbock and West Texas questions, answered
How much does a custom iron door cost?
Price depends on size, configuration, glass and hardware. A single door at the standard 38″ × 97″ sits at the low end; double doors at 74″ × 97″, pivots and custom arches move up from there. We quote from your actual opening rather than a catalog price, and the quote is free.
Do you actually deliver this far west?
Yes. Lubbock, Midland, Odessa, Amarillo, Abilene and San Angelo are part of our regular route, not an exception we make. Delivery is built into the quote, so there is no surprise freight line at the end.
How long does it take?
Every door is made to order, so there is fabrication time after the design is approved and the opening is measured. You get the lead time in writing when the order is placed, which is what lets a builder put it in a schedule.
Will the finish hold up to this sun?
That is the question we get most in West Texas, and it is a fair one. The polyurethane finish is specified for UV resistance and carries a five-year warranty. The steel behind it carries a lifetime structural warranty.
Is there a showroom in Lubbock?
Not in West Texas. Our showrooms are in San Antonio, Houston and Austin, and we cover the region from the shop with site visits and measures. Call (806) 500-7148 or request a free design consultation and we will come to you.
