San Antonio, neighborhood by neighborhood
A door that belongs on a 1920s bungalow in Monte Vista has almost nothing in common with one built for a two-story entry in Stone Oak. Here is how we think about the parts of San Antonio we work in most.
Stone Oak
Newer construction with tall entries, where eight to ten feet is common. That is exactly where stock doors stop working. Our standard single door measures 38 by 97 inches and our standard double 74 by 97; anything beyond that is built to order, which is most of what Stone Oak calls for. Double doors and pivots read best at that scale. Most subdivisions here run an architectural review, so tell us what your association requires before anything is cut.
Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills
Older homes with original openings that are rarely square and almost never a standard size. We measure the opening as it is and build to it, so the door sits in the wall you already have instead of the wall a catalog assumes.
Monte Vista
A historic district, where the entry has to satisfy a review board as well as the homeowner. Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean facades call for hand-forged detail, which is why models like Valentina and Alejandra tend to suit these houses better than a flat modern profile.

Built for South Texas sun
A west-facing entry in San Antonio takes direct afternoon sun for most of the year, and metal moves with heat. That is not a reason to avoid iron. It is a reason to build it properly.
Every door we make ships with double-pane insulated tempered glass as standard, closed-cell polyurethane foam insulation in both the jamb and the slab, weather stripping on the door and on the glass frame, and a door sweep. Low-E glass is available on any model.

Sizes, glass and finishes
Standard single doors measure 38 by 97 inches and doubles 74 by 97 inches. Anything outside those dimensions is a custom order, which is most of what we build in San Antonio. Glass comes clear as standard, with Aquatex, Rain, Flemish, Satin and Low-E available. Finishes are Dark Copper, Copper, Pewter, Dark Bronze, Bronze and Black. Four handle profiles, right or left hand swing, square or eyebrow top.

Frequently asked questions
Can you build to an existing opening?
That is the whole point of custom. Our standard sizes are 38 by 97 inches for a single door and 74 by 97 for a double, and anything else is a custom order. We measure your opening as it is, out of square or non-standard height included, and build to it.
Will an iron door hold up to San Antonio heat?
Built properly, yes. Double-pane insulated tempered glass is standard on every door, the jamb and slab are insulated with closed-cell polyurethane foam, and both the door and the glass frame are weather stripped. Low-E glass is available when the entry faces west.
What glass and finishes can I choose?
Clear glass is standard. Aquatex, Rain, Flemish, Satin and Low-E are available for an additional fee. Finishes are Dark Copper, Copper, Pewter, Dark Bronze, Bronze and Black.
Can I see the doors before I order?
Yes. Our San Antonio showroom is at 12133 Colwick Street, at Nakoma, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 5:30. Photographs do not tell you the weight of a hinge or how a hand-forged scroll catches the light.
